In many ways, Maryland is uniquely situated to be a "hot spot" for human trafficking: Human trafficking is often referred to as modern day slavery. In its most basic form human trafficking is fraudulently, forcibly, or coercively using another for purposes of exploitation. There are two main types of human trafficking: sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Maryland's central location has facilitated its development as both a pass-through state and a destination for human traffickers. Traffickers utilize many of our highways, especially Interstate-95 to connect victims to major east coast cities such as New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
